Just went to look for my birth certificate and didn’t find it. My passport is expiring in March and renewing it is really expensive, especially since I have no travel plans. I will do it anyway.

I just went through the steps to order a copy of my birth certificate online. It’s time consuming and difficult. I had to provide a credit card to pay five dollars for it. Many people don’t have Internet access or credit cards which would make it impossible for them to get a birth certificate copy without help.

My name does not match my birth certificate, which I foresee could be a problem for some registering to vote or when showing up at the polls. Would someone like myself have to provide a certificate of divorce showing my name change?

This propose legislation is sickening. I am calling my congressman in the morning, but he’s a MAGA so it might be a waste of time. At least I’ll feel better having done something

Shout at your state representatives over the phone, there are comprehensive lists of phone numbers all over the internet. Tell them you oppose this. It. Works.

How can we stop this nonsense…

Call your state house and congress representatives. Blowing up their phones with calls does wonders. No member of committee will actually act if they know it will p*ss of state voters.

The freedoms given in the constitution are disappearing before our eyes. We seem to be headed towards an autocracy, with Trump, Musk and their cronies on top and the rest of us herds of cattle to be put in corrals or out to pasture. The curse, "may you live an interesting life" is coming true right now in the U.S.!

They aren't going yet. When your reps get quiet, get LOUD. Look up the phone numbers of your representatives and get all your friends to call them in opposition.

I wrote this piece about why it’s time for new Democratic leadership in the Senate. It’s a deep dive into where things went wrong and what needs to change. I’d appreciate it if you gave it a read.

I'm calling my Senator (Baldwin) and Representative (Pocan) tonight about this. Call your congress person. We are reminded that is how the Affordable Care Act Trump threatened in first term was saved -- The People showed up and demanded it not be done away with.

You should be able to show a marriage license to show the name change trail from birth certificate to passport. Unless this is designed to excluded women?

So, if this passes, requirements are to have a passport or birth certificate. Most don’t have passports. Women who are married, their names don’t match their birth certificates, so they will be unable to vote. Am I understanding this correctly.

I am considering changing my name back to the way it appears on my birth certificate. I do have a copy of my birth certificate and my driver's license is a "Real ID." When I got my Real ID a DMV worker complained that my items didn't match; maybe I should have reverted to my birth name then. I don't want to change this, but I also don't want to be denied my right to vote by honoring my late husband by keeping his name alive. This all sucks.

I just sent my passport in due to my recent marriage, to change my last name on it. I half expect it to not be retuned to me, because I am a woman.

As you stated, this is obviously designed to take out the voters most likely to not vote for Republicans. In years past, I wouldn't worry because the unconstitutionality of this is so in your face that even myopic conservative judges can see it. The current SCOTUS cannot be counted on to reach that same conclusion. Democracy Forward and others will definitely weigh in through litigation. We have to rely on our federal judges that still follow the law and hope this never gets to SCOTUS. Most cases never get up to SCOTUS, so there is that little sliver of hope.

We experienced this first hand during our voter registration drive on NAU campus in Arizona. The law allows anyone who resides here (including students in a dorm) to register to vote with no time constraint. But students who have an out-of-state drivers license or no drivers license could only register to vote in the federal election. We explained to them how to follow up with the county registrar so they can vote the whole ballot, but we end up with many “federal only” voters. This is how voters are disenfranchised and it is on purpose. They’ve had a successful test drive here and they want to expand it nationally.

I can imagine my spineless sell out of a senator Fetterman voting for this.

It’s an understandable argument. In CT, we need to show ID to vote in a very blue state. I don’t think this asks too much. Let’s hear the other side. The suggestion is that old folks and younger folks and any minorities get ids up to date. Since I’m accustomed to bringing my id when I vote, I don’t see the harm in this.

Too many of us take this right to vote causally but it happens to be the most imports thing we can do.

Any bets which demographics this hits the hardest?

None if you call your state reps. Look up their phone numbers and get your friends to do the same. They listen if you give them no quiet.
