We cannot blame a Congress we have allowed the 1% to pay for. The idea that open influence peddling, lobbying behind closed doors and the 1% paying for electoral victory will yield a democratic body is incredibly absurd.

Since Reagan, the revolt of the haves against the New Deal sensibilities that widened democracy and economic opportunity have meant we have ceded our birthright. The Clintons famously ceded the high road by joining in the corruption and abandoning McCain-Feingold. There was never a third way. It was a different shade of lipstick on a pig.

And Congress approves the federal judiciary.

We have been played and snookered. So let's not act offended when Congress or the courts fail us. We had no right to expect otherwise. Not if we were serious citizens instead of distracted dolts.

Oligarchy and authoritariaism want dominance and certainty. That is the very opposite of democracy and reaching consensus. When the fundamental process is corrupted all we can otherwise do is to watch a once elaborate system of checks and balances fail.

“We should demand that Trump pull back from his threat to issue mass pardons to the insurrectionists.” How do we do this? To whom, and where do we make this demand?
